Our experience, supported by learning psychology, leads us to believe that peer group learning is more efficient and more enhancing than the traditional way of learning.  Moreover, the results are also longer lasting for those who study this way.

Scholarship

Akuratatha’s scholarships are awarded to students based on their parents’ income. Support is also given to orphaned children and to children from single parent households where there may not be an income.

Community  Development Project

During the uncertainties of 2020 - 2022, when food supplies were unreliable due to curfews and lockdowns, our organization started initiatives to teach the children how to live “off-grid”.
The objective of these programs: Perma Culture & Gardening Project, Composting Project, Biogas Project was to show teenagers how this would work for their village, when a community identifies and takes collective action on issues that are of importance for an independent and sustainable community life......Read More                                                       

Housebuilding Project

Another basic human need in addition to food, drinking water and clothing, is shelter. If such needs are not met, it is impossible for a child to continue going to school regularly, let alone be motivated or succeed educationally. In the photos below, you can witness how a housebuilding project was done by us.

Fundraising for schoolchildren

Sri Lankans face various obstacles caused by natural disasters. If the adults of the family are hospitalized there will be no income for essential needs and the children need help. Through fundraising Akuratatha can give them assistance to continue attending school and help in various other ways. Donations are used to pay the expenses of Community Development projects, taking the students on excursions and supplying families with food and daily essentials in times of natural disasters.

Volunteer Program

public education is available from the age of 6 to the age of 18. However, many government schools, particularly in rural areas like Akuressa, receive minimal government funding. The facilities at the schools are very basic, particularly the classrooms that get extremely cramped as average class sizes are around 40 to 60 children.
